The only problem is he is now 18 and doing A levels. Would he be allowed to apply to go to university in Australia or does he have to get his degree here and then apply independently?

As long as you can provide evidence to show that your son is 100% dependent on you and your spouse for food, shelter and clothing, then he should be able to be included on your application.
