Return of Document request

Eligibility criteria: 5yrs (Workpermit ) + 1.25 Yrs ILR - joint application
Method of application: Postal (Next day special delivery)
Date of application: 25 Feb 2013
Date of receipt by UKBA: 26 Feb 2013
Date of debit of fees: 11/03/2013
Date of receipt of acknowledgement: 14/03/13 (Dated 11/03/13)
Date of receipt of approval: Waiting
Date of ceremony: Waiting
My mother-in-law has passed away today, can anyone please advice how well the return of documents request works as we chose not to apply via NCS as majority of application were processed in up to 3 weeks at the time. we are aware we won't be able to make it in time as it may take up to 20 working days for the documents to come back. is it advisable to request for return of documents? would it affect the nationality application in any way? Thank you for your advice.
