I am also an EEA citizen who applied without PR. 2.5 months now.

I think i should point out that the application timescales are up to 6 months. While we would all like an approval ASAP, we knew the timescales from beforehand and I dont see any reason for concern if you have no response after 2-3 months.

Difficult to generalise based on what we see on this forum, based on 10 applicants. On top of that there is the forum bias where people waiting keep posting while people who get approvals disappear. Its the nature of fora

I recall seeing other FOI requests about approval percentages etc in the past, but I guess because this was about a particular category, they weren't able to answer.

Hi Em,

yes, I applied without a card, and the letter arrived today. The initial joy of finally having received my approval was quite quickly replaced by the realisation that the approval arrived 1 day before my 7 months wait would have been over. I'm glad it's over, it hasn't been very stressful in general terms, as I gather I'm in the relatively fortunate position as a EU citizen to have the same rights as a British citizen, however, I would genuinely like to know why it took so long.

Hi K, wow that's fantastic news!! First EEA application without PR to come through! Finally!!!! Now there is real hope for all of us who are on the same boat...
Congrats and enjoy being British!
Did you chase it up with call centre or MP or did you do anything to get them to get on your case?

I find it extremely disturbing that some applications do not even take a month or two to process, while others are kept waiting! If the application was free I could understand people having slightly more patience, however I feel that the Home Office are messing with our emotions here. I am extremely upset and worried that they will not meet their 6 month deadline after going through other months. I have a holiday booked for the end of April and i am panicking!

Hey! Don't lose hope , HO cannot continue putting EEA without PR applications on hold forever, however as they just seem to be starting to process them again (one has just come through for "samaralady" ), they will need to catch up with the backlog they have accumulated since April 2014, and it is difficult to say how long it might take them.
I agree with you that the level of service does not match the price paid!
If anyone else gets good news regarding their application, please post it to spread the good vibes

My question is a bit out of the topic, as a german national won't you lose it when you take up British citizenship? I thought Germany don't allow dual nationality or has the rule changed?

@ lake1. It is a common misconception that Germany does not allow dual nationality. Dual nationality is allowed under several circumstances, for example:
- children with a German and foreign parent, or a parent holding two citizenships, acquire all parent citizenships by virtue of the principle of descent
- Germans who apply for the citizenship of another EU country or Switzerland no longer automatically lose their German citizenship
- Germans who obtained permission to retain German citizenship before applying for a non-EU citizenship
+ many more exceptions...

Thanks lily for the information I asked cos I know of a good friend who had to give up his Nigerian citizen just to aquire a German one be it he did this over 13 years ago hence why I asked if the law had changed.

So if Germans can take EU citizenship without losing the German one would I be correct to say in the case of my friend that lost his Nigerian one he can get British one without losing his German one - he already has PR in the UK ? Trust me he won't give up his German one for UK, he is a proud German guy

He can have both German and British citizenship, no issue at all.

Hi all, i will like to update you guys that i receive a letter from home office after my MP contacted them regarding my application. here is the response:

Following our assessment of your case, unfortunately it appear ur application will not be processed within the 6 month target. we expect to make a decision on your application within the next 3-6 month, but we will write to you again if this is not going to be possible. pls note we will contact you with further updates.

This also applies to any family members whose application for citizenship were submitted at the same time.

Sorry I totally missed the discussion about having dual German and British citizenship.

I can confirm what has been written here before - dual citizenship is permitted if it stays within the EU. I don't know about the other exceptions, I know the Germans were really anti-dual citizenship (and still are), and up until 2007 it would not have been possible to retain my German citizenship. I specifically emailed the embassy about this.

As your friend, I'm a proud German Madel and wouldn't have wanted to resign my German citizenship
