Naturalisation questions

My wife become self employed in May 2014; she's registered for self assessment but her first tax return is not due until Jan 31, 2016. In about three weeks she will be applying for naturalization and the HO asks proof of tax returns from the self employed.
She has not paid the tax yet, it's not due for the next 5 months. Is it a better idea to settle the tax and make the application afterwards or does it make no difference at all?

We have a reminder letter from HMRC shwoing that she ought to submit a tax retunr for this financial year and that the due dates are this and this.

Hi
Thanks for the reply. I am aware of these deadlines but my question was a bit different: the online submission deadline, Jan 31 2016, is still 5 months away; so if she applies for naturalization this Aug, without taking care of the tax, would that be a problem? Common sense says it should not because the tax is not due until next Feb, but common sense does not always prevail, so I wanted to get an opinion.

Thanks

It would be wise to submit the tax return before applying for BC.

You just write on the form that self employment started in May 2014 and your first tax return is only due 31 January 2016. That's what I did and it's fine.

From what I remember the HMRC won't give you a self assessment until after you've paid your first tax and after the 31 January for first year filing.

If the self-assessment is submitted online, there is an immediate calculation from HMRC.

Thanks for this. So, you were in the same situation and applied without submitting the return (as it was not due yet), no?

I was thinking to do the same--writing down that self employment started in tax year 14-15 and that tax is not due until Jan 31, 2016.

same referee for all family members

Hi
In about three weeks we'll apply for naturalization, myself, my wife and son. Is it OK to use the same referee or referees for all three applications?

What I have in mind is this: We have a family friend, who was naturalized last year and has a British passport, and she knows us for more than three years. Can she be a referee for all three of us, signing all three application forms?

Common sense says the answer is yes, because they are different applications and it's just normal that the same person knows and interacts with all family members. Wanted to see if anyone had been in a similar situation.

Thank you

Yes, it should be fine to use for all three.
