Getting the first UK passport abroad

If I am going to apply for British citizenship, get a certificate, and leave the counrty, can I apply for my first passport at the British embassy in my new country of residence? If so, what is the difference in terms of process? Is there a passport interview? How long does it take? Can i use a foreign citizen as a referee in the passport application form? What documents are required?
Any advice would be highly appreciated.

Thanks very much. Unfortunately there is nothing there about getting the first passport abroad.

Which country do you intend to apply for your passport?

So, you are going to US then you require
1. Proof of citizenship. This can be a previous passport or a certified (with a raised seal stamped into the paper) copy of your birth certificate.
2. Two identical two-inch square photos, color or black and white, with a white background, and a facial image size between one and one and 3/8 inches.
3. Proof of identification, with a photo and signature, such as a driver's license or student ID.
4. Fee of $60 for sixteen years old and over, $40 for fewer than sixteen.
5. A completed but unsigned form DSP-11. The appropriate authority must witness your signature when you present it. This form is available from post offices, or by calling Passport Services.

Wow, so the fee for applying abroad is almost half the fee for applying in country?

Erm ... don't think so - a google for DSP-11 reveals that information is appropriate for applying for a US passport in the US.
