ILR success but BRP not returned—common practice?

Hi all
Had a quick question for those of you who have passed ILR. Did you receive your existing BRP back on return of your documents?
I didn't receive my Tier 1 BRP when my documents were returned and wanted to know if this was common practice.
Basically I had a trip planned next week (which I may very well receive the new ILR BRP for) but wanted to have the Tier 1 BRP (which wouldn't have expired) as a fall back.
Can anyone help here?
