ILR Application Expedition

Hi
I sent my ILR application on 30th of Oct and am still awaiting results. My father is going for a heart by pass operation on the 9th of January so will probably have to withdraw my application. However loosing £970 for no real crime really really hurts.
I have seen the expedition process mentioned in this forum a few times but I am not sure what it is. I have actually written to the home office and mentioned my circumstances but they have not replied.
Not sure what to do ....
any advice?
