70/90 Days Duration of Stay Outside the State

Post by Malik10991 » Tue Jan 13, 2026 2:57 am

Hi Guys
I have a question relating the stay outside the state after the application for citizenship is submitted.
I know it is advised that one shouldn't be staying outside the state for more than 70 days unless for exceptional circumstances prior to applying for citizenship. Now my question is does this restriction applies even after the application is submitted? Like would your longer than normal visits outside the state be scrutinised post application while deciding on your citizenship?
I will be much obliged if you could answer the above.
Thanks a Million

Yes. The documentation is clear on this. And it is 70 days without good reason.

No, it only applies to the 12 months immediately before you apply.

After you apply you're simply expected to intend to continue to reside in the state (or on the island if married to an Irish citizen)

KOD Lyons (kodlyons.ie) say that:

There is no express guidance in the Irish Nationality and Citizenship Act 1956 about absences from the state after the lodgement of the Naturalization application.

They’re very clear in the guidelines before the application is lodged, which is continuous residence. KOD Lyons Solicitors advise that you have to be continuously resident in the jurisdiction so that you’re in compliance with your conditions and any exceptional absences from the state really should be notified to the minister during the currency of your application.
