Become a british citizen if born in uk

Post by Minaminuccia » Mon Feb 17, 2014 2:14 pm

Hi,
I was born in the uk in 1985 and my sister in 1980 and we have lived in the uk all our lives.
Both our parents are italian nationals and i we were registered as italian citizens at birth and hold italian passports. I'd like to know if we are eligible to become uk nationals as we would like to hold british passports (since we were born in the uk). I've been reading on the home office website and it states that registration costs over £700...??? should i perhaps look into dual nationality?

Can anyone shed come light on this... Perhaps I've been looking in the wrong section on the home office website?

Thanks,
Mina

What did you parents do in the UK when you were born? Did they work?

Your sister is probably already British from birth (dual national) and can just apply directly for a passport (if she wish) unless if your parents were dilplomats at the time.

If one of your parents worked in the UK when you were born then you are also a British citizen from birth.

So i just need to contact the home office and apply for a british passport?

Probably, get a certificate of British nationality status from the Home Office, using form NS, plus the fee.

Obviously, be careful about sending away irreplaceable documents. At a minimum, always keep copies and use a secure delivery method (courier).

Once you have a certificate proving you are British, then you can apply easily for your British passport.
Your sister, born in 1980, doesn't need to take this step. She can apply for a British passport based on her birth certificate.

Do either of you have children born in Italy? These children should be British (by descent) and you can get them British style birth certificates as proof of their British citizenship.
