No Birth Certificate

Post by velton » Sun Sep 29, 2024 3:28 pm

My Chinese wife is applying for Irish Citizenship. She has been asked for her Birth Certificate. The problem is she has never had a Birth Certificate. She was born in the countryside and at the time (over 60 years ago) there was no such thing as Birth Certificates. Does anyone know what can be done? TIA

ISD will ask her to get a birth cert issued by a notary public in China, to get what is called a notarial birth cert. She should use as much supporting documentary evidence as she can to get as much information as possible included on this birth cert (as that will make naturalisation and passport application much easier for her). ISD recognises that China only started issuing birth certs in the last couple of decades so they are used to accepting notarial birth certs from Chinese nationals. She'll need the same document to get an Irish passport after approved as Irish citizen.

Forgot to add: and then she'll need to get this birth cert made into a certified copy in Ireland and also translated by a registered translator (eg ITIA or CIOL) in Ireland.

Indian embassy in Dublin issue Birth Certificate based on your original Passport. this is accepted by ISD. You can check with Chinese embassy if they issue a Birth Certificate based on the Original Passport (issued by China).
