Passport application - Do you have any passports from other coutries?

Post by phillipsmw » Mon Aug 17, 2020 10:27 am

Hello everyone,
Can someone advise please?
Was naturalised just before lockdown and now applying for first British passport.
My country of birth does not allow dual citizenship, so when I was naturalised I automatically lost previous citizenship (no renunciation required, stated in law that it is automatic)
I have not returned or cancelled my old passport yet. It is in date, but I cannot use it as I am no longer a citizen.
I do not need to change name or anything - details will be same as on old passport.
So should I choose yes or no that I have passports from other countries? I physically have it, but it's no longer usable.
TIA !

Choose YES - it a requirement by HMPO that you submit in original your other current and/or uncancelled passports - to ensure all travel documents use the same identity. Those will be returned to you unmarked.
This is just my opinion as a member of this forum and does not constitute immigration advice.

Annex A: use of names in passports
8 Failure to disclose a foreign passport

8.1 The United Kingdom places no restrictions on the ability of a British citizen to hold dual nationality. The passport application gathers information about other passports held for security purposes alone and it does not provide dual citizenship information to the country of origin. Therefore, disclosure of an existing passport or ability to apply for a passport issued by another country is necessary and relevant to the UK passport application and issuing process.

8.2 Being in possession of an existing passport or the ability to obtain a passport from another country is part of the decision making process in considering an application for a British passport. It is an important element of the identity confirmation process.

8.3 Failure to disclose this information during the application process is a criminal offence and may render the applicant subject to criminal prosecution. HMPO will consider whether the matter should be referred for criminal investigation and whether the existing passport should be withdrawn. A withdrawal of the passport would be on the grounds of:

“Passport number [ ] issued to you on [ ] has been withdrawn as you indicated on the passport application form that you have not been included in any sort of passport before. It has come to our attention that you were issued with a passport by [country] on [date].

It is open to you to make a new application for a British passport and this will be considered in the light of all the information available at the time of the application. Any application will need to be accompanied by the appropriate passport fee

Thank you both :)

Actually I have just taken another look at the rules in country of origin. It seems that only men automatically lose the nationality (this happened to my brother which is why I assumed this for me). But for women, who become married and then naturalise elsewhere, they keep dual nationality unless it is formally renounced. So after all, my current passport is still valid.

So therefore comes a follow up question - sometime in the future I would want to change my surname to my husband's surname. (I cant do this now because of COVID travel restrictions)
I understand I would need to change my name on other passport first, then in the UK change name via deed poll, then driving licence etc, then finally apply for UK passport renewal under the new name with the new supporting documents. is this correct?
Thanks again

Probably simpler if you keep your maiden name for your British passport, in line with your foreign passport, under 7.3?
