Dress code for British citizenship ceremony

Post by Shaun45 » Mon Nov 19, 2018 6:30 am

I received my approval letter and ceremony invitation from the British High Commission last week. I need to attend a citizenship ceremony at the residence of the British High Commissioner in early December.

I would like to find out what the dress code is a for this occasion. Must it be formal, ie a suit or can you arrive smart/casual? Do they take a picture at the ceremony? Advice would be appreciated.

There is no guide for this - at mine there were people in jeans, business suits, special occassion suits and dresses. Though I think one should dress in accordance with the importance of the occasion.

I was thinking something smart/casual with a shirt and tie perhaps. Do they take photographs at the ceremony that you can keep? This is a important life event so I would like to take a picture of this important event.

Photos are usually taken yes, with you and your cert in front of a portrait of the queen.

I was thinking the same thing regarding the photo, but wasn't sure. My one friend got his Australian citizenship a while back and was grinning in front of a life sized cardboard cutout of the Queen.

There is no dress code for a citizenship ceremony per se, but given that yours is taking place at a High Commission, the High Commission may have a dress code. You may want to check with them as well.

I emailed my local British High Commission and the person said the dress code is smart/casual so I won't be arriving in top hat and tails.
