Dual citizen - bank wants share code for mortgage

Post by amd234 » Sun Oct 24, 2021 1:01 pm

I am dual Polish / British citizen. I have received my British citizenship in 2018 and did not apply for settled status. Now I want to apply for a mortgage and the bank is asking for "share code" to prove my right to work under Polish citizenship. I have explained that I also have British citizenship which I can use to prove my right to work but it's a computer says no situation with the bank. What now?
Can I still apply for settled status to get the code?

A British citizen cannot apply for an immigration status, which Settled Status is.
In the UK you are a British citizen, not a Polish citizen!
Have you ever updated your nationality on your banking profile, either online or in branch?
Are you applying online or in branch? Perhaps you need to talk directly to someone if you are having issues online.

It is a bank I do not have an account with at the moment - I wanted to start a mortgage application with them. They asked my citizenship and I have declared British and Polish. They said they need the share code for all dual citizens, even if I have British citizenship. The bank is first direct, they have no branches.

I would always say I'm British - your other nationality (as a dual citizen) has no relevance in most dealings.

Having just looked at their website http://mortgages.firstdirect.com/mortga ... -do-i-need the first section seems to be quite clear:

"Proof of identity
A countersigned, full and valid UK or foreign passport, or a photocard driving licence (full or provisional) that displays your current address will be acceptable. An EU National Identity Card may be accepted but always check with your lender up front so that you can gather the documents."

This would have saved the question about Settled Status ....Can you revise your application, or maybe start a new one?
They said they need the share code for all dual citizens, even if I have British citizenship.
This sounds like nonsense to me ... can they show the relevant section of the law?

Also explain to them that a British citizen cannot have an immigration status which Settled is. Doesn't make sense because you have full freedom in your country, the UK!

Thank you.
Hopefully I can re-start the application from scratch.

Update: I have spoken to the bank again and got through to adviser with a problem solving attitude. They looked into this and confirmed I do not need share code after all. I said that I am dual citizen and explained this:

Glad you sorted it.

It's just disappointing there are so many cases like this coming to light where staff are not familiar with the rules, or are making it up as they go along, it seems.
