Failure to Report Change of Address since 6 Months

Post by zsragg » Mon Jan 08, 2024 9:05 pm

Hi,

TL;DR I'm panicking as I've changed address 6 months ago and have not informed Home Office of that change due to confusion with work (sponsor) and my responsibilities, and wondering if this delay would have any bad impact on my current visa status and future (ILR) application.

Timelines:
- July 2021 => Address Change - only informed work and was given impression they will inform Home Office about it
- Aug 2022 => Skilled Worker Visa applied successfully and received BRP
- June 2023 => Address Change - only informed work

So I got married in UK few days ago and asked my work if they inform Home Office about that change along-with address change which happened in June 2023. To my surprise, they told me that they won't do it for me and I would need to tell Home Office about my address change, and also no need to inform HO about marriage.

They gave me this link: https://visa-address-update.service.gov.uk/ to inform HO about address change. So, I have immediately submitted the online form - and at the end of form it said "We've sent confirmation to ___email address__", but I haven't received any yet - Anyways It's written on the site that it can take upto 5 days to update address so I'm hoping it just works out.

Problem is due to above confusion with work and delay, as I'm 6 months and 19 days late in informing Home Office about my last address change.

:?: How will Home Office know when I moved in to the new address? The online form did not ask for any move in date - all it does it to ask for was the address and then Evidence (I've provided Tenancy Agreement & Council Tax bill which are both dated for June 2023, and then recent Energy Bill dated within 3 months). I'm guessing they will just deduce the tenancy start date from the Tenancy Agreement?

:?: Will this delay of informing HO have any bad impact on my current Skilled Woker Visa status and also upcoming ILR application (it's in few months time)?

:?: Would they fine me and any idea how much would that be? and Is there any way to inform HO that it was completely unintentional mistake due to confusion and won't happen again?

:?: Do I need to inform Home Office about getting married?

You are worrying about something that is very minor and will have no impact. Don’t sweat over the change of address.

As for marriage - as an overseas national you could not have been married in the U.K. without Home Office approval. That suggests you many have married outside the U.K.?

There is no compulsion to inform the Home Office you are married.
