First Irish Passport

First Irish Passport

Hey everyone,

I grew up in Ireland but only completed the FBR recently as I wasn't born there. I now live abroad, in a country without an Irish Embassy.

I have contacted the Irish Passport Office and the closest Embassy and each has informed me I must send all original documents, including my passport, and that copies can't be reliably accepted. On top of this, because Embassies only send and receive documents when there is 'enough' to be sent, I've been told it could take 6 to 12 weeks to be in possession of my Passport.

My question is, is it easier/possible for me to go back to Ireland for a month, open a bank account with a temporary address and simply apply there? I really don't want to be stuck without a Passport at all.

I'm unsure why Ireland makes this more difficult than other countries but, I guess here we are.

Are you not allowed to apply online? And usually a notarized color copy of FBR certificate is allowed as is a notarized color copy of Driver License. It's all on the DFA.ie website

If I apply online, all the documents must first be sent to the closest Embassy and then to Dublin.

I was told, on the phone, that the Passport Office will require originals for a first application and this was from two separate people. I have read otherwise on here and on Reddit but, they spoke in absolute terms.

That would still require some of the original documents, ie birth certs, so won't remove the need for a passport completely.
Also, re passport, you need to either send a foreign passport or copy of a PSC, which would take a good few months to get (if you actually will - they'd probably want to see an IRP or something if you're not from EU/UK), so you'll be stuck without a passport in Ireland.

I wouldn't mind being stuck without a passport in Ireland and, I do have an old PSC card but it's expired by a year and in my old name (matches my FBR Cert though). Would any of that help?

Since it's expired, I doubt it'll help - otherwise you could've applied with it if coming from Ireland.

You first mention you don't want to be without a passport at all and then you state you're fine being without a passport in Ireland - which is it?

You can also keep things as is (I assume you have a UK passport by the flag) and apply for Irish passport later, when you're ready to part ways with the passport- there's no deadline to apply for a passport after getting FBR cert.
