Guidance on Spouse Visa Extension (5-Year Route)

Post by ashycal » Sat Jan 11, 2025 5:26 pm

Hello everyone,

I need some advice regarding my wife’s upcoming spouse visa extension application (5-year route). Her current visa expires in three months, and I’d like to clarify some points to ensure we meet the requirements.

1. Financial Requirement:
• I will be the sponsor, and we are relying on my income to meet the £18,600 financial requirement.
• I work on contract jobs and, when between contracts, I have applied for Universal Credit. Over the current year, I’ve worked for 6 months and earned £32,000 in employment income.

2. Current Job Situation:
• My recent contract ended in November, and I am actively seeking a new one.

3. Key Questions:
• Given the temporary Universal Credit claims, can my wife still apply for an extension under the 5-year route, or would this situation force us onto the 10-year route?
• If I secure a new contract before we submit my wife’s application and avoid claiming Universal Credit this time, will it strengthen our case? My understanding is that 6 months’ bank statements are crucial, so would avoiding Universal Credit make things more straightforward?
• What supporting documents related to my financial situation will we need to submit to successfully meet the financial requirement for the 5-year route?

I’d appreciate any insights or guidance from those who’ve been in similar situations or have expertise in this area.

Thank you!

Best regards,
Amit
