Non-EU/EEA or Swiss citizens
Non-EU/EEA or Swiss citizens have the right to work in Bulgaria only after a National Employment Agency work permit is issued. The permit must be requested by the employer. Applications are submitted to the local branch of the Employment Agency of the foreigner's work place.
Work permits are issued to foreigner's who possess specific skills or specialised knowledge that can not be found on the national labour market, to those wishing to be self-employed or if they have been commissioned by a foreign employer to provide services in Bulgaria.
The work permit is issued for a fixed period of time, usually one year, for a specific job and employer. The permit may be renewed for a further three years for executive personnel and managerial positions. Once the work permit is issued this provides a basis for the Bulgarian Consular representations abroad to issue a visa, valid for the same length of time.
A residence permit must be applied for within 90 days of arrival in Bulgaria.
Work permits are not required for foreigners with permanent residence status in Bulgaria or those who have been granted asylum or other humanitarian status.
