Information Regarding Common Travel Area

Post by Baris Mertoglu » Fri May 20, 2022 2:12 am

Hi Friends,
I have stamp 4 of 5 years time period and then i'll apply for Naturalization in Ireland. I can stay 6 week outside the Ireland no more than that.
I spent more than 6 weeks outside the Ireland but in UK with my family. I heard that UK is in the COMMON TRAVEL AREA which means that there is a agreement between Ireland and UK, according to that i can stay outside the Ireland in any country just 6 weeks apart from UK, because a lot of persons come to Ireland for work on daily basis and a lot of persons go to UK for work on daily basis as well.
It means i can stay as much as i want in UK and that days will never count when i'll apply Naturalization but if i'll spend more than 6 weeks apart from UK then i'm not able to apply for Naturalization in ireland after 5 years. I have to wait in Ireland for one or may be two years than i can apply for Naturalization.

Someone have any information regarding this.

Regards
Baris

Common travel area doesn’t mean that and no you can’t stay in UK as much as you want. If you leave Ireland for more than 6 weeks in any year then you can’t use those days for your residency calculator. For example you left Ireland for 50 days in 2021, then it means your residency days in Ireland will be 50 days less. If you leave Ireland for more than 6 weeks in the year just before your citizenship application then you won’t be able to apply and have to wait, this is called continuous residence rule.

If you leave Ireland for more than 6 weeks, then you will have to state reason for this absence while you apply for naturalization. And last but not least you will need tourist visa to visit UK and NI. Common Travel Area doesn’t allow non-EU nationals to travel without visa.

You can leave Ireland to anywhere up to 6 weeks any year and it’s fine, more than 6 weeks, then it’s a problem.

Mentalmind has summarised it pretty well, but just to add onto that, Common Travel Area is for UK and Irish nationals only. No one else can avail of anything in the CTA agreements. Not even the family members of the UK/Irish nationals. All stays outside of Ireland are considered, including any stays in the UK.
