Maximum stay on a long term visitor visa

Post by May2019 » Sun Jan 08, 2023 12:00 am

Hello

My mother in law has 5 year visitor visa valid upto November 2025.

She came to UK 13th September 2023. And will be staying upto 20th feb 2023 making 161days in UK this visit.

Now can she come on 31st August 2023 and stay with us for another 160-179 days (we will be using 13 days from her left over allowed term of 19days out of 180days in 12months) but also will take care she stays with us only for 170 days in her next visit. So her next visit will be roughly around 31st August 2023 uptill mid of Feb 2024.

She will be staying at least 190 -206 days out of the UK and will definitely go back before 180days of allowed term in a year starting from date she enters UK.

The above appears workable so far not staying more than 6months at a time and coming back in less time.

Also see this very similar thread, and the links within my response to the thread.

There is no numerical limit to how long a person can stay in the UK on a multiple year visit visa, save that each visit can't last more than six months.

But it is forbidden for somebody to reside in the UK in the guise of a visit visa, by frequent or successive visits.

If your mother in law keeps coming to the UK for six months at a time every once a year (both frequent and successive), the Immigration Officer may cancel the multiple entry visa and return your mother in law back from within the airport.

Also factor in that she will not be covered for NHS usage and travel insurance does not normally cover a visit longer than 30 days (check the terms of her travel insurance).

Use visit visas wisely.
