ICELAND: Residence permit, etc.

I'm an American citizen and my boyfriend and I plan on living in Iceland for about a year.

I don't have a job secured yet, so I plan on applying for a residence permit without a work permit. Either I'm misunderstanding someone or I'm getting conflicting information. Can I apply for a work permit once I arrive in Iceland and secure a job?

Also, as part of the residence permit application I'm required to have medical insurance. I don't even know where to begin searching for one. Can anyone suggest the name of a reputable insurance that's affordable?

Last, I need to have a criminal background check? How do I do that?

Do a general search for travel/medical insurance in the USA and/or Iceland. Medical insurance for long-term periods can be quite costly.

For a criminal background check, probably DoJ website. I think they have quite a few types of background checks.

I don't know about the USA, but in the UK, either your employers get your details and send it off, or the person usually would go to the local police station and do it there.

As explained on the Belgian embassy website, so the rules are likely to be rather similar:
