Passport used to enter the UK with lost & expired

Post by parabola5552 » Wed Jun 05, 2019 7:45 am

I was born in Ukraine in 1996 but permanently moved to the UK in 2005.

I entered the UK with a Ukrainian child travel document. This travel document expired in 2008 and as a result, I have not left the UK since then.

My parents attempted to send my documents to Ukraine where my grandma + my biological father could apply for another child travel document in but everything was lost by Royal mail (including my birth certificate). My parents went to Ukraine in 2009 to obtain a new copy of a birth certificate and travel document but they did not have enough time to obtain both - so I only have a reissued birth certificate. The immigration people in Ukraine recommended that my mum should add me into her passport, and she did. I have my name, photo and age in her passport (which expired in 2014).

I applied for and obtained british citizenship last month and have sent off an application to obtain a british passport. In this passport application I submitted all correspondence with royal mail, all scanned copies of my expired child travel document plus my mum's original expired passport.

Yesterday I received a letter from the passport office telling me I need to send them the original passport I used to enter the UK with. If this was lost, I must have it replaced by the Ukrainian authorities and send the replacement to the passport office.

I don't understand this as:
1) The travel document has already expired anyway?
2) I cannot obtain a child travel document as it would mean traveling to Ukraine - which I cannot do without a passport
3) I'm over the age to obtain a child travel document anyway
4) I'm now a British citizen, how am I able to obtain a Ukrainian child travel document??

What do I do?

My mother's passport was already a replacement to my child travel document

Call the passport office and explain this. You should have gotten a police report when your passport was lost.

I received a call from the HM Passport Office case worker and she asked me to provide proof of my renouncement of Ukrainian citizenship.

Is this really required? I was originally asked to provide a replacement document to the lost one and I did. It’s my mother’s passport which contains all of my documents.

Someone recommended contacting an MP regarding this.
Is there anything that prevents me from owning a British passport as a British citizen - if I have no prior convictions or restrictions from any sort of government body?

It is best recommended that one should not presume they have a right to receive any document on demand. One has to change their mindset and stop thinking they know what is logical and what is legal whilst HO people are fools.
There are misunderstandings that arise and those can be sorted out. HMPO even called you for clarification so they are trying to find a solution. What a question like "is it really required mean"? Do you think they ask for documents that are not required? They have nothing better to do?

When you applied for naturalization, you submitted some document. I assume it was your national id card. For issue of passport they require your passport to confirm the same name is used as your foreign passport. Your name is included in your mother's passport and that has to be cancelled with a certificate confirming that your name has been cancelled from that passport and that u have renounced Ukranian citizenship'

Thanks for your reply.

I still don't fully understand what for. I cannot find anything that says I have to renounce any type of citizenship to obtain a British passport. Please could you share the source which suggests otherwise? I'm just trying to seek some sort of clarification as the process of renouncing citizenship is extremely long (approximately a year) and requires me to travel to Ukraine (on a one way temporary travel document) - something which I do not want to do.

And the only identification documents I included for my naturalisation application were my BRP, full UK driving licence and my mother's passport (as I do not have anything else). So why are these documents sufficient to get a British citizenship but not a passport?

UK does not require a naturalized citizen to renounce their other nationality.#
So when they suggested you renounce ur Ukranian citizenship it was only because it would mean you do not have any other national passport. If you do not have an uncancelled passport there is no other passport to compare your name with. So the alternative is to remove your name from your mother's passport, and have your own passport. Apparently the process would take time so the suggestion is to renounce Ukranian citizenship which is also time consuming. HMPO staff do not know the difficulties of all the 194+ nationalities so they gave you an option. You have to choose between the options so decision is yours. If you are Ukranian you should obtain a passport whichever way you do it or renounce Ukranian passport. You can get your naturalization done using other forms of ID but your passport is issued in the same name (spelling, hyphen etc) as your foreign passport. So they require your foreign passport. They need to check that its the same name.

When you are told to get a replacement for a lost document it means a document that is valid. A replacement for a child travel document is a passport after the child becomes an adult. So you need to apply for an adult passport or renounce ur citizenship.
