Although I didn't put any cover letter (as I had nothing to explain extra for my case) I did put little sticky notes with headings (like earnings, koll, cohabitation) between my neatly divided sections of docs for them to understand what each set of paper clipped docs were addressing. For my application I applied within 28 days before finishing 5 years and filled 4 yrs 11 months and this was fine. So from feb 2010 to your date of application will also be 4 yrs and 11 months and this is perfectly fine. As I wrote earlier they r only looking at the 5 year period before your ...

Although they do not state any specific amount to be shown, in section 5 you need to fill if u r paying rent/ mortgage and further on they say in section 11 if u have filled section 5 you need to show you have enough funds after the expenditure to support yourself and dependants. In my case I have a degree from UK so I submitted that for proof of English language to satisfy KoLL (along with life in uk test).
