I would answer No to the first question and Yes to the second question in that case.

I believe "leaving the country before the curtailed visa expires" is "choosing to voluntarily depart the UK".

I would be inclined to go for a spousal visa because I got an unmarried partner visa, and I had to declare that my partner and I intend to live permanently in the UK. If you have to be in the US for 1.5 years, it seems like becoming a spouse will make it easier for you guys when it comes to visa ...
