Use ILR to enter UK after getting Naturalization

Post by AndriiAntonov » Mon Sep 04, 2023 4:19 pm

Dear Sir or Madam,

I have received my Naturalization Certificate after a Citizenship Ceremony 2 weeks ago. Now I can apply for the UK Passport, however I must travel in the end of October and it takes 10 weeks to get the UK passport. Therefore, I can't get the passport before my travel date.

I still have my Ukrainian passport and ILR card.

My Questions:
Can I use my ILR card to re-enter the UK after travel? In other words, does UK cancel the validity of the ILR once a person gets a Naturalization Certificate?

Please note that according to the Ukrainian legislation, dual citizenship is prohibited.

Risks are: I will not be able to return to the UK and would be deported, I guess...
I can also just stay in the UK but will loose my tickets and hotel bookings.

Also it says on my Home Office Application result: "Once you have received your certificate of British citizenship any Biometric Residence Permit (BRP card) you have will no longer be valid and cannot be used as evidence of your status. If you have a BRP card you should return it for secure destruction. You may have to pay a penalty of up to £1,000 if you fail to return an invalid BRP."

Thanks,
Andrii Antonov

British nationals are NOT subject to immigration controls, so a British national cannot have a UK visa, ILR, etc. This is why the ILR status is LOST the moment you attend your citizenship ceremony and become British. You are also required to return your card to the home office after being granted citizenship or face a fine.

To enter the UK as a British national you either need a British passport or you can get a 'certificate of entitlement' as proof of your right to abode in the UK. See: https://www.gov.uk/right-of-abode/apply ... ntitlement

Note that If you end up at the UK border, you will be admitted without any issues if proven you are a British citizen. So you may use your ILR card to simply board a plane to the UK. However, sometimes ground crew may scan your BRP during pre-boarding checks and an invalid ILR status might show up. I highly advise against using a document with an invalid status to board a plane.
