Can Someone Please Help? Can i obtain German citizenship?

Post by Rowodeso » Thu Jun 29, 2017 4:36 pm

Hey, I know this whole conversation took place a long time ago, But, hopefully someone might see this.
I am wondering how it all worked out for you, what you figured out, because I am coming from a similar scenario; I'm American.
My mother is (or Was) German, born and raised in Berlin, but came to America before I was born (in 1990)
Think she came to U.S. in the late 70's or in the 80's. Don't know about her citizenship or naturalization status after she arrived, pretty sure she was a full U.S. citizen when I was born.
I am going to Berlin soon, and am considering becoming a German citizen.
My mother's father, sister, aunt, uncle, cousin and other relatives all still live there, always have...

I want to think there is a good chance for me to live & work in German easily, with these family connections there, but I as well have had a hard time finding the right specific info on various websites.

If anyone sees this and can add anything,
Thank you.
Danke

Did your mother file a Beibehaltungsantrag before she was naturalized as American and was it granted?

If not, she lost her German citizenship automatically when she became a US citizen.

If she did retain German citizenship, then you were most likely born a dual national.

It would be a good idea to get as many documents (birth certificates, marriage certificates, old /current passports, naturalisation certificate) and contact the nearest German Embassy or Consulate.

This is from the website of the German Embassy in Canada but I can't find the equivalent on the US pages:

http://www.canada.diplo.de/Vertretung/k ... tml#topic1

Finding the answers to the questions on this page would be a good start.

Do you speak German?

There may be some other ways go get German citizenship for you but this would heavily depend on your personal circumstances (German language skills, German culture, strong connections to your family in Germany among other things) and would definitley require teh help of an experienced lawyer.
I am not a regulated immigration advisor. I am offering an opinion and not advice.
