Permesso Di soggiorno problem

I have a problem on my hands,I have tried to get the information from every possible source in India aswell as Italy ,but am unable to find the perfect answer to my Query.

You would do me a great favour if anyone could give me a solution to my query.

I am an Indian national married to an Italian national.I am in possession of Permesso Di Soggiorno Per Stranieri valid from 06/05/2009 to 21/05/2014.

I arrived in India on April 1st 20011.I plan on leaving for Italy on 12th May 2012.

Hence,My stay outside of the European Union would be for more than 12 consecutive months.

Recently,i came across an article on the http://www.poliziadistato.it/articolo/10723/ website, which states that my Permesso Di Soggiorno can be revoked if i stay outside the

European Union for more than 12 consecutive months.

I wanted to know whether this applies to my Permesso di Soggiorno aswell?

Would I have any problem to travel to Italy in MAY 2012?
would i have any problem for renewal of my permesso Di Soggiorno?

Presently my wife is in Italy.Hence ,I would be travelling alone to Italy.
