Optimistic Perspective on the Job Hunt in the UK...

Post by apeterso925 » Thu Aug 02, 2007 7:41 pm

I thought I would post a quick optimistic note on my view of the job hunt, now that I am in the early stages of it.

I waited to begin job hunting in earnest until about 2 weeks ago, as I felt that employers and recruiters really wouldn't take me seriously if I wasn't arriving in the UK for another month or so. I can now say that I could interview in less than 2 weeks, which seems to be received well.

Certainly no concrete job prospects on the horizon for me yet, but I've been very pleasantly surprised by the way I've been treated so far by both the recruiters I've spoken with and on the one phone interview I've had.

Not only have I not had to explain the meaning of HSMP to any of them, but almost all of them have congratulated me on obtaining it. I'm actually starting to think that having this visa garners a bit of extra respect...as though they actually *do* see us as highly-skilled ;)

We'll see how things progress, but I just thought I would let others who are in the same step in the process (or on their way to it) know that the job hunt isn't as traumatic as I expected! :)

What field of work are you in - if you don't mind me asking...?

I am in IT - So far i've looked and there's literally a few hundred jobs in London for my specialisation. I'm hoping with 3.5yrs exp in my field, that i'll find a job easily!!

I do agree with you apeterso925.

Even when I had posted for jobs, the recruitment companies called up and as I said I am in the process of HSMP application, they asked me to update them once I file the application.

and yes for IT jobs, there are a lot of opportunities.

I'm in product management (sort of a subset of marketing and operations), and while I'm jealous of you IT people ;) , there are quite a few positions in my field right now, so fingers crossed.

And of course, August is a slow month, so I expect that what I see right now is the low end of the spectrum.
