Clear list of needed documents for EC...are there any rules?

Are there any hard and fast rules on the documentation you need to provide for an EC? (outside of original HSMP docs of course) They are not as specific on their website as to what exact douments are needed to prove financial stability. Do we really need to show additional tax returns outside of HSMP info? Also, will they contact us if they need additional information besides what we provide?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. FYI, I am applying from the US as a US citizen.
