Proof of earnings confusion

Post by cuberoot » Sun Feb 12, 2006 6:23 pm

Hi

I am slighlty confused about the evidence required for proof of earnings. I have read the caseworkers manual and I understand that 2 types of evidence are required. I also understand that the points are calculated on gross earnings? And preferably the 2 type of evidence should correlate?

The first piece of evidence is easy, payslips from the company, endorsed with the company stamp. This will show gross earnings.

The eveidence I am confused about is the tax return. A tax return is submitted by myself, so what makes it official? Or are they referring to the tax certifcate (IRP5 document) that an employer provides before the end of the tax year? If they are referring to that document, then I assume it must also be endoresd with a company stamp? Also, the tax certifcate from the company will only show taxable income, which will not be the same as gross income.

Please help me. Im really confused.

Thank you.

The fact that this document is processed/assesed by the Revenue/Income Tax department of your government makes it an official document. It probably also contains your income tax reference numbers, your tax code etc. It also corresponds with the income you show by way of salary slips. That way they compliment each other and make it easier for the case worker to give you the points you claim.

You should also send in your bank statements if you have them. The manual says at least 2 types of evidence. If you have more, then it serves to reinforce the fact that your application is authentic and watertight

Thanks for the reply.

So the document you are speaking about is the tax return that I submit myself? Not the tax certificate I receive from my employer?

I was thinking of adding bank statements as extra eveidence. The bank statements will show net income, this will be the same net income value from the payslips, but not the amount that I would claim for points. Is this correct?

I understand your dilemma . I am not sure from which country are you applying. In India generally our gross income used to be more that the one that we show in our tax returns. Reason, Govt policy allow for tax rebates etc & loopholes. Such as home loan, car plan etc.
But the problem is ,for HSMP application ,only convincing proof that home office accept is either tax return form that you submit to income tax authority or tax certificate that employers gives to you. All other proofs such as bank statement, salary slips are second fiddle. Though they are also important to validate your this prime proof of tax return.
So when I apply for hsmp, First thing I make sure was make my taxable income as high as possible( more than what is required to gain points on salary) . I stop taking car plan, stop submitting medical & telephone bills that gives tax rebate. As these figures used to get removed from the tax certificate that the employers gives to us. I remember my colleagues used to discuss in great details as how to reduce one’s taxable income. While I used to concentrate on how to make sure more income is shown in my income tax certificate.
