Conviction enquiry

Please can I get an advice as regards a situation.

Do have a Criminal conviction (Common Assault) . I was given a community sentence;probation. the event happened a year ago. Please can I still be eligble for free travel as a Briton? Do I require a visa?

Entering Canada is becoming more difficult every day, and immigration officers are "matching" offences committed in other countries with their standards.

For example, my co-worker's Dad wasn't allowed in because he had a DUI in the US 4 years ago.
