B1/B2 Visa

Post by Liverbird$ » Sat Aug 16, 2025 7:48 pm

My wife and I are recently retired and looking into extensive travel plans to the USA and the Bahamas. We are both UK citizens and have the B1/B2 visa on our UK passport. Due to the size of the USA and the many islands of the Bahamas this life experience could be for up to 5 years health permitting. Am I correct in thinking that we could use our B1/B2 visa for entry into the USA for up-to 6 months and then travelling to the Bahamas for 90 days and returning back to the USA on our B1/B2 visa. We would still have financial ties to the UK as we would keep our home here as we would return to the UK after our adventure.Financially we would be OK we just need the flexibility to keep entering and returning to both the USA and the Bahamas instead of returning to the UK as our 2 dogs will be part of our travels.
Any information would be appreciated or contacts of individuals or organisations that could help.
Thank you.

Yes, you can stay in the US for up to six months with a B1/B2 visa, subject to the USCBP officer discretion at the port of entry.

However, I don't think this is a good idea, even more in the current scenario.

If you're doing frequent and/or extended visits, the USCBP officers may suspect that you're trying to reside in the US without an appropriate visa, which could lead to denial of entry or issues with future visa applications.

USCBP is very clear about that. See: https://www.help.cbp.gov/s/article/Arti ... uage=en_US
The CBP officer inspecting you will want evidence that you intend to go back home to your country of citizenship to live as opposed to returning again and again to the United States after visits to other countries. Do not forget, a B1 or B2 visa allows you to travel to the United States to visit. If the CBP officer suspects that you are attempting to be a de facto resident, you will be refused entry.
