Sick parents and BC

Post by InUkOnHsmp » Thu Feb 21, 2013 11:12 pm

Hi Forum,

I am going to be eligible for naturalization as a British Citizen at the end of the year.

Now my situation is that my parents back in India are really ill and I need to get there to assist them as soon as possible.

I am being a bit selfish here and waiting till I get BC. My initial plan was to

1) get registered as a BC
2) get the oath ceremony done
3) get my passport
4) surrender Indian passport
5) get OCI

and then go back.

However looking at my parents condition, I want to get back by their side at the earliest, is it possible to go back after step 1 and get 2-5 done from India?

Also in the long term, is it possible to get old dependent parents here if I am a British citizen? Would they be treated as visitors, or is there some kind of dependant visa where they will get medical care etc as well?

Thanks in advance.

you wont get your naturalisation cert till the oath ceremony. I believe steps 1 and 2 need to be completed in the UK.
Steps 3,4,5 can be done in India but my understanding is that it takes significantly longer than here. Think several months for each step...

Thanks ssachinda.

I know it might take longer to get it from India, but I have to stay for an year at least as my mother has a number of operations lined up, so I am not too concerned about that.

In the same regard, is it possible to apply for naturalization, give a friends address for receipt of the certificate and further communication, travel to India, come back for the ceremony when the date is set?

Also anyone has inputs on how to get parents here once I am a British Citizen?

Yes, you can apply for naturalisation, leave the country and come back to attend the ceremony.

Also see Adult dependent relatives
Adult dependant are not covered by healthcare for 5 years and you need to submit an undertaking SU07 in this regard.

Thanks Ban.s, appreciate your inputs, there are so few places where authoritative advice is available on this.

Just to confirm, its OK to give a friends address for receiving the Registration certificate? There no address checks etc in the process?

Hmm thats not going to work for me, my father receives regular pension and also I have a sibling (sister), so might be hard to prove they are dependent on me.

there is nothing called a registration certificate. you'll receive a letter of approval and also an invitation letter to attend the citizenship ceremony. at the ceremony you'll receive your naturalisation certificate.

UKBA will write you at the address you provide to them. you need to provide your current address in the form (not your friends). if you move out after you submit your application whilst UKBA are reviewing your case, then you need to inform UKBA. this could be your friends address.

however, note, your citizenship ceremony will normally be at the council where you are currently staying (though you have the option to choose a different venue).

ps: perhaps this thread should split and be moved to british citizenship section.
