Want to work in Singapore - requirements?

Hi friends,

I plan to take up a job in Singapore. But i am not familiar with the requirements i.e do I need to apply for a work permit before applying for the job or once I get the job, my employer can sponsor it.
In other words, I am not clear on the formalities required to be done before taking up a job in Singapore.
I am from India.

Any guidance on the job prospects in Singapore would also be useful. I am a SAP FICO consultant with 3+ years experience in SAP and over 5 years domain experience.
Also, if I manage to land up a job in Singapore, what would be decent salary range that I can expect if I want to take my wife along with me. Would 5000 SGD per month be a decent amount?

S$5000 per month would be a handsome salary. Be prepared to spend S$2000 for rented accommodation. Food is cheap. You don't need a car.
