Why does ukba need our passports for T1 ext?

I have always wondered since UKBA is giving out Biometric cards, why do they need the passports for T1 extension? I am sure they have all the information they need any ways.

Would anyone know?

not sure why your query was thrown out of the Tier 1 section & dumped here even though it specifically relates to T1 extension but anyhooz...

passport serves as more of an identity document rather than just being used for sticking vignettes/visas. personal info from your passport, its number etc are all digitally encoded on the chip/scannable code of the BRP card. BA cannot just rely on info given by the applicant on the T1 application form

Because almost every immigration application where a BRP is issued requires a passport to be submitted, not just "Tier 1 extension"!! That the OP happens to be a Tier 1 (General) migrant asking the question is coincidental.

Likewise, your response makes sense for everyone who may have the same doubt, not just an applicant applying for Tier 1 extension.
