work permit procedure

Hi! My prospective employer has offered me a job as a fashion designer, but he does not know how to apply a work permit for me. Please instruct me about how my employer needs to do for me, and if necessary, what do I need to do and what documents I shall provide. I am currently holding a student visa and will be running out in the end of July 04, which I doubt if I need an entry clearance to apply for a work permit rather than apply it in the UK! What is more, will Home Office require me to provide my previous work experiences references, since I will not be able to provide all the previous employment references. Thank you.
