Work permit expiry - HSMP

My work permit will expire in another 3 months.
I am planning to apply for hsmp. Since HSMP processing is taking around 3 months, is it wise to apply for HSMP now.

If my hsmp application is still under processing and my work permit expires, can I continue to work in UK or do I need to apply for my work permit renewal.

once your WP expires, your stay will be legal for as long as your HSMP app is processed, but you lose your right to work - if that's essential, you should apply for the WP renewal.
