How many years of residency are required for a child born in Ireland to gain Irish citizenship? 3 or 5 years

According to Civil Law (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2021 which has been signed by President, a child born in Ireland only need 3 years' residency to gain citizenship. However, when I checked the application process, the requirement is still 5 years' resisdency not 3 years for a minor child with non-EU parents.

Where did you read that??? That bill is only 12 pages long. https://data.oireachtas.ie/ie/oireachta ... /a1421.pdf

The main purpose of that bill is to enable restaurants to be able to cater for more customers in open settings during the summer season when COVID restrictions were in place. I don’t remember at all where it mentions a child born in Ireland. Are you confusing it with the General Scheme?

Now I understand. I mistook Civil Law with General Scheme of Civil Law. So the bill which was finally passed has left out the Head 44. The residency of 5 years is still required for the naturalization of a minor child born in Ireland. Thank you.

No worries. Yes a General Scheme contains all the bits and pieces that a certain politician wants to discuss/debate, but there is no guarantee that they will be discussed, debated, voted or signed into law.

The Act, which the President has signed, contains only 12 pages. Unfortunately it does not mention anything with regards to amendments to the Citizenship Act. I hope the Minister would bring them up again this year.
