I applied for naturalisation - now thinking I have an issue

Post by ellbriwat » Thu Mar 19, 2026 9:06 pm

Hi, I hope everyone is doing well.

I applied to naturalise, but I realise now I misunderstood the requirements for time outside the country.

Basically, I met the requirement for no more than 70 days outside Ireland in the year prior to application. But I did not make up for the couple of years prior where I was outside Ireland for more than 70 days.

Is my application going to be rejected outright? The length of time from submission to the first response should cover the extra time I need (about 5 months).

Thanks for the help.

I'm not sure how hard the rules about being over 70 days in earlier years are. Did you list every absence from Ireland on your application form? Did you have any extra days residency before the ones you used for your application?

I did list every absence (it was a lot to list, many small trips). I listed most of them as “trips” but not sure if I should have listed them as “family related” when the trip was to home. I explained one year that the push over 70 days was due to the death of a grandparent, not sure if that affects anything.

I do not have extra days from beforehand, I just misunderstood and applied too early based on advice online.

Curious if anyone else had a similar issue (too few days at application but enough by the time of review).

Just to add for clarity, I was not advised online to apply when I did, I mean that the advice online is that I have applied too early based on days out of Ireland.

Not sure what happens now

If it's lots of short trips do you know what travel days when you spend part of the day in Ireland don't count as absent days? So if you fly out on Monday 1st and back on Wednesday 3rd, that only counts as 1 day absent?

Death of a family member causing a few extra days should be understood.

I don't know, but I suspect the worst that will happen is that they ask you for evidence of extra days residency after applying 🤷
