US tourist sent home by immigration

Post by Southern_Sky » Thu Jul 23, 2009 10:57 pm

She then had to fly back to Atlanta but then flew back to Manchester. Then her problems started all over again.

Officers there spotted that she had been refused entry to Ireland and began questioning her. She was not allowed into the UK. But she said the immigration officers were lovely.

She was soon back on another flight across the Atlantic and $4000 (€2,800) out of pocket without a vacation.

Ms Fowler now wants an apology and the removal of the refusal from her passport.

Not sure that this woman has a leg to stand on. She can complain about the staff being rude but I don't see how she can dispute the "refused entry" stamp. Just because US (or other) citizen does not require a visa to entry Ireland, it doesn't mean they can arrive without any evidence that they intend to leave, or evidence of funds to support their stay. An ATM receipt is hardly evidence of funds, and the lack of an onward flight was pretty remiss of the passenger.

I have traveled to many countries and whether a visa was required or not, I've always had to have an onward flight ticket.

I doubt that the UK Immigration officials refused her entry because of the Irish refusal. Sounds like she didn't have her story straight by the time she got to the UK either?!

A one way ticket can be a huge red flag for any immigration officer.

I would think that they would need exactly the same supporting documents, proofs and convincing stories as visa nationals. The only exception is that non-visa nationals (may) have to prove it only once to an immigration officer and not at the embassy of one's residence first time. Visa nationals have to prove themselves twice.

I find it hard to believe that an American will, want to travel all the way across the Atlantic to come an work or live illegally in Ireland.

I think a bit of discretion is vital in these circumstance.

I will try not to comment on the actions of the British, as that has caused me few trouble lately.

There's a bit more too the story as she is actually a journalist who has in the past written about her trips to Ireland.

Also it has been reported that the British immigration called the Irish immigration who said they said they didn’t want her in the U.K. in case she tried to get back into Ireland.
