FAQ: eVetting process for citizenship applications.

Post by meself2 » Sun Aug 27, 2023 12:21 pm

This small post is created to clarify common questions and confusiions related to eVetting.

What is eVetting?
It's essentially a process of Garda checking your background for any sorts of criminal records.

How is it relevant to citizenship application?
ISD (Immigration Service Delivery, government department responsible for immigration and naturalization) wants to make sure you're a person of "good character" - did not commit any serious offences. They ask for your information, so they could forward it to Garda NAtional Vetting Bureau (NVB) and get a report about anything you done, if there's a record of it. It's important to note that a disclosure will be given regardless of your criminal history - it'll just say something like "nothing found" if there's nothing about you in police databases.

At what stage of citizenship process do I get vetted?
At the moment, eVetting is second to last stage of citizenship application - if you're there, you, most likely, don't have a lot to wait after that and next stage is supposed to be the approval (there were cases reported on the forum about people being asked to send in additional documents or edit their application, so it's not certain).

How does the typical eVetting process for citizenship look like?
From your perspective:
1) When you get an email from ISD about eVetting, you fill out a form online on ISD website (your personal information plus consent to share it with NVB).
1a) If form is filled incorrectly, you resubmit it.
2) You get a Garda Vetting form to fill out - you go through it, fill it out and submit it.
2a) You, possibly, submit a PCC (see section below "Do I need a Police Clearance Certificate?").

That's it! You're done. Just wait for ISD to progress further.

That's how it looks internally:

Do I need to pay for eVetting?
No.

Is there a time limit for eVetting?
Not sure about responding to ISD with a form, but as that's an online form, I would advise you to do it ASAP.
WHen your form is passed to Garda, you have 30 days to fill out the form on Garda website.

How do I feel the Garda eVetting form, what's it like?
See this user guide on eVetting website - https://vetting.garda.ie/Content/UserGu ... rGuide.pdf

What do I need to prepare for eVetting?
It will state on the email.
Please ensure you have the following information readily available;
List of names that you are also known as i.e. maiden name, married name, name change on divorce/separation, name change by deed poll, nickname or name you are commonly known as other than the name on your birth certificate.
Previous addresses since birth.
Passport Number (where applicable).
The following information is required in relation to a criminal record, court date, court name, offence and court outcome.
I had already gone through eVetting as part of my job/volunteer role/etc. - can I forward the results to ISD?
No, you have to go through the process like everyone else. As NVB is bound by the form you submitted, only the orgaization that submitted the form can get the results, plus ISD would want to check it themselves.

Do I need a Police Clearance Certificate?
Most likely, no; sometimes ISD asks for a PCC, but that's more of an exception than the rule.

I applied as a spouse of Irish citizen living in NI - do I need to go through eVetting?
No - you will be asked to submit a Police Clearance Certificate (see post2117070.html#p2117070) for dicussion and confirmation. Request a DAT1 from PSNI.

I am putting a number to track my application on Garda website and it gives me an error - what's wrong?
There are two different numbers in this process - one starts with EVET (EVET123456789012) and another starts with INI001 (INI001-12345678-12345).
Only INI001 number is trackable. If you're trying to paste an EVET number into Garda tracking website, you'll get an error, as EVET numberi s internal for ISD - it has nothing to do with Garda.
If you are putting in your INI001 number and it errors, check your DOB.

What do all the different statuses mean?
Here's a good explanation of all the different statuses; it's made by TUDublin (and for TUDublin students), so please apply some common sense and mentally change all the information appropriately to ISD.

My tracker hasn't moved for a while - why could that be?
We don't know the inner workings on ISD. From personal experience, my tracker only updated on 13th day or so, so it could be a normal behaviour. You're free to check timeline thread to see how long eVEtting might take, but remeber that we're all in different circumstances - what applies to others, may not apply to you.

When will I get emails? What do they mean?
You'll get an email from ISD (noreply@inisonline.jahs.ie), when:
1) You will be asked to fill out an online form,
2) Automatic email, when you sumbit the eVetting form, and,
3a) When your form has been forwarded to NVB, or,
3b) If your eVetting form is filled incorrectly and ISD found this out (so they want you to fix it) - return to step 1.

You'll get an email from Garda (evetting.donotreply@garda.ie), when:
1) eVetting application from ISD has been processed and they want you to fill out the form,
2) autoreply when you submit the form - ISD should now check you form and send it to NVB,
3) your form has been forwarded to NVB, and,
4) disclosure has been viewed.

It shows on the tracker "Application process completed" but I didn't get an email - why?
Because that's not the end of a whole process - Garda has done its job, but ISD hadn't yet. You'll get an email when ISD will view the disclouse (see question above).

It says "Download expired" as a status now - what do I do?
Nothing, it's a normal procedure. It just means ISD can't download your disclosure any more as it's deleted, but since they already seen it, it doesn't matter.

Can I get results of my eVetting from ISD?
No. While technically you can ask whoever has vetted you to get a copy of your eVetting, I wouldn't expect ISD to routinely honour those requests - I have not heard of anyone who got their results that way, plus it's just not worth the hassle.
