A simple question, hopefully someone will be able to answer!

Any help would be greatly appreciated: my friend who was born in the UK has just come over to England with his 4 year old daughter having lived in France for the previous 24 years. He is staying with me and I have discovered that he must wait three months before he can apply for benefits. When this time comes I am unsure how will he be able to prove that he has has been living here for 3 months. I have tried asking the Citizens Advice Bureau how he might go about proving this and they were most unhelpful. I am now worried that when my friend tries to claim benefits in 3 months time they will turn around and tell him that he has no proof he's been living here for as long as he says he has. How might he obtain proof he has been living here since his date of arrival, will his ferry ticket alone suffice as proof?
