ATAS for T4 Doctorate Extension scheme

Hi guys,
Does anybody know if a new ATAS is required to apply for the T4 DES? the guidelines don't make it clear, as in some places they say if the topic is the same, you don't need, and in others they say if you are beyond your initital end date then you should apply. I am currently doing my PhD corrections.
