No surname on Naturalisation Certificate

Post by londonealing » Sat Jan 09, 2016 9:32 am

Dear forum members/experts,

I would really appreciate your help/advise on this.

I received my BC approval yesterday and called in the council to book an appointment for a ceremony. They couldn't pull up my file on their system using my surname but managed to do using my first name. The lady said there is no surname on my natursaliation certificate sent to them by HO. Surname/lastname, she said is printed something like this on the certificate **surname** which isn't in my case. I have a scanned copy of my entire AN form and I did write my surname in the surname section and firstname(s) in the other names section. I have always done this in every single application I sent to the HO all these years. In fact even on my Bio-metric and confirmation of receipt letters they addressed me as Mr. XYZ. Also my provisional D/L , council tax bills, bank accounts etc have my surname. Also every time I applied for schengen or any other visas I never had issue with surname or even booking air tickets I always used my surname. The only problem which I feel is significant is the surname section in both my old and new passport is blank. The entire name is written under "given name" section. The council staff told me I can send the Naturalisation certificate back to HO for correction after the ceremony.

My question is - 1) Will it be a right approach to send them a copy of my AN form (where I did write my surname in the surname section) and a letter requesting them to correct it ?

2) Or should I get my surname added in my current passport (reissue new one) ? and then send the new passport, AN form copy and Naturalisation ceritificate for this correction ? This I believe will cost me £162

I am kinda confused here.. I shall be grateful if someone can help me in this..

What country were you born in and how are your names shown on your birth certificate?

Is it like:

Given names: AAA BBB
Surname: <blank>

I would suggest you go with Optioin 1. Option 2 is costly and time consuming. If you have got a copy of your AN form, then send it. I did the same. They have an alphabet wrong in my birth name. Also, I send a copy of my marriage certificate which had my birth name togather with my AN form page 3.

Below is my thread. I will update the result when I get my corrected certificate back. Keep an eye on it if you want.

It's going to depend if HO are treating this as some sort of identity/name change or whether they agree it's an overight & admin type of error.

Suggest try to treat it as an admin oversight & see if they will correct it by return.
If HO disagree they will be sure to let you know in their response.

Note don't rely on any HO helpline advice, you will need to do all this is writing.

Your naturalisation certificate will have the name printed exactly as it appears in your passport. So if you passport does not have a surname, then it is not an HO error. You should have corrected your foreign passport first before applying for citizenship.

You would need to correct your foreign passport or wait until you have your British passport and then do a deed poll and reapply for a British passport.
