Non-UK Grandparents documents requirements

Post by malvar » Mon Aug 26, 2019 10:25 pm

Hi,
My child was born last July 2019 whilst my partner has held ILR since Nov 2018. As I understand, the child is automatically a British citizen and can already apply directly for a British passport.

There are questions about grandparents which are easy enough to answer (Names, DOB, Date of marriage). Problem is on the 'what you need to send' page they are requesting for grandparent's documents: birth certificate and marriage certificate (!).

Given that my spouse and I are not from the UK and it's long process for the grandparents to secure these, my questions are: can I disregard grandparent documents requirements? And just send my passport and BRP ILR as proof?

Thanks a lot

I sent a covering letter clarifying that I do not have these documents and from what I have read online, they are not needed as we are applying in basis of my settlement and UK birth certificate. If they absolutely need them then they should contact me and I will see if I can arrange them.

Got the passport in 14 days without any questions asked.

Forgot to mention one thing. HMPO did send a physical letter and email to referee’s work address asking him to confirm the identity of my newborn on the company’s letterhead.

Thought that was odd but a cursory search online showed that this was done as part of spot checks.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the reply. Good idea on the cover letter saying that as non-UK nationals, it's not easy to secure these documents.

I'll give a heads-up to the referee.
