UKM Online Application / Passport Number Entry Problem

Hello. I'm filling out the online UKM form so that I can register as a British citizen. One of my referees has a British passport with a passport number that includes letters and is fewer than nine characters. The online passport number box only accepts a nine digit number. My referees older style passport number gets rejected. I'm going to call for guidance but I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this and, if so, what happened and what the options and/or solutions were. Thank you.
