British citizenship for child born in uk but living abroad

Post by willycdso » Mon Sep 18, 2023 4:06 pm

Hi, Would someone please be able to guide me? My child was born in Feb 2018 in UK but at that period of time i was a Portuguese national and i had my permanent residence certificate and was in the process of applying for my British citizenship. I was Neutralised in Oct 2018. Due to personal problems, we decided to apply for her Indian passport through her mother. Now with our problems sorted, I want to bring my family over. Is it possible to do my child's British citizenship as her pre-settled status has expired. Thanks

Did you have permanent residency at the time child was born in the UK?
The permanent residency certificate you mention, is it a blue tri-fold card, including the word "permanent"?
This is just my opinion as a member of this forum and does not constitute immigration advice.

Have a look at the image in this post. In the line that states "Type of document", can you confirm that it states "Document Certifying Permanent Residence"?

If the above is true, as your child was born in the UK while at least one parent had permanent residence, the child is a British citizen automatically from birth.

Apply for a British passport with the DCPR (the blue cardboard tri-fold) and your child's birth certificate.

Be aware that the DCPR predating your child's birth is the only proof of your child's British citizenship (and therefore of their children's and so on down the line). Guard that document with your life and keep it in a safe container where it won't get damaged.
