Couple questions about Citizenship

Post by Puppet2 » Mon Jul 12, 2010 8:14 pm

Hi,

I'm not sure if this is in the right place or not (its my first time) but I have a couple questions about applying for citizenship.

I have ILR since September 2009, and intend to apply for Citizenship in September 2010.

I am wondering how long the process/application process takes generally. I am trying to weigh up the benefits of using NCS also.

I don't think there will be any issues with my application. Only change from ILR is that I am now working through a Limited Company (and pay all PAYE/NIC, etc, contributions).

My main questions are:
1) how long (generally) do applications take?
2) If using NCS do they give you back your passport after photocopying? If so, does this mean that you can travel whilst awaiting the decision?
3) I read that you have 90days from receipt of acceptance(?) to have the ceremony - is there much of a wait time to get an appointment?

Sorry about the questions, but as I can apply in September, and am planning on going home for xmas, I just want to make sure I am doing the right thing.

Thanks

1) how long (generally) do applications take?
Anything between 5 weeks to 6 months with straighforward applications tend now to be less than 2 months

2) If using NCS do they give you back your passport after photocopying? YES and although not formal, applications through NCS tend to be dealt with faster at the Home Office
If so, does this mean that you can travel whilst awaiting the decision? YES
3) I read that you have 90days from receipt of acceptance(?) to have the ceremony - is there much of a wait time to get an appointment? Depends where you live but normally the wait is only a few weeks if at all.

1/ I would say about 4-6weeks for straight forward cases.
2/ Yes you will leave with your passport and any other original docs. The NCS say you shouldnt travel in the first 5 days after that you can travel around the world if you please
3/ Yes you have to have a ceremony within 90days of approval. The wait depends on the council were you will be having your ceremony. Most if not all also have private ceremonies which can be as soon as next day, there is a price of course and this also varies from council to council.

Its a good thing you are asking the questions now rather a week b4. Have a look at the guidance and application form
