Born outside UK to a British father who doesnt live in UK

Post by Edo » Thu Jul 22, 2010 5:05 pm

My father has British nationality but has been living outside UK since 1975. My mum is not British and I was also born outside UK in 1984.

Father lived in Britain between 1966-1975. He worked there as a doctor on something called an Employment Voucher. He returned home in 1975 and then registered as Birtish in 1988. Just to mention here that he didnt have to travel to UK to become British national and always held his original nationality too.

I wanted to see if I am eligible to claim an ancestory visa or British citizenship. I have searched the UKBA's website but couldnt find a concrete answer in a case where only the father has British nationality. Please could anybody help me if theres a rule I can take advantage of? I'd really appreciate any useful tips.

Something doesn't make sense here. There were a lot of people registered as British in 1988-89 because some transitional provisions of the old British Nationality Act 1948 expired on 31.12.1987 (and many people applied to meet the deadline).

That said, I am not clear on how someone who had left the UK in 1975 could have benefited from these.

What exactly does it say on his citizenship certificate?

(and also, don't get your hopes up because even if he did become a British citizen in 1988, if you were already born it probably won't help you).
