Would also recommend looking at this thread for more info on citizenship application as a former overstayer https://www.immigrationboards.com/briti ... 33216.html, and where possible, best to request professional opinion from an immigration lawyer.

Thanks for the above. From what you’ve provided, it seems that I can apply. Maybe I should point out that I was arrested in 2009 and given a caution/NFA. I was about 18 at the time, and I’m 34 now. Can I still proceed with the application?

I would disclose but also elaborate on how your character is solid as you have been an overstayer as well.
All advice comes from personal research and experience and should not be regarded as professional opinion.

Naturalisation Approved

Post by zblake » Tue Oct 07, 2025 1:30 pm

I wanted to share my personal (and quite unique) naturalisation journey in case it helps someone in a similar situation. This forum has been incredibly helpful to me, and I hope this post gives someone else clarity or courage to apply.

My Timeline:

Entered the UK as a minor, without legal status, and remained in the country as an overstayer.

My Naturalisation Application:

I applied for naturalisation on the same day my ILR was approved, even though I was separated from my British spouse.

On the form, I selected "married" (as we are still legally married) and included my spouse’s new address for transparency.

I was fully honest in my application — I declared a past police caution and also submitted an ACRO Police Certificate, just to be safe.

I had previously been told I needed 10 years of legal status, but I decided to apply anyway, despite not meeting that requirement yet.

I was also concerned about the new naturalisation rules introduced in February 2025, but I chose to take the risk.

To my surprise, I was approved within 2 months!

Please note: this is just my personal experience. The Home Office assesses each application individually, so what worked for me may not work for everyone — but if you're in a similar situation, don't lose hope.

Wishing everyone the very best on their journey!
