I am a British citizen and my wife is an American citizen. We are currently living in America and have an 18-month-old son who was born in America after we got married. We might move to the UK soon, and want to get our son British Citizenship before we do this. How do we go about getting him British citizenship? Thanks for any help.

Are you British from birth? Were you born in the UK or is one of your parents British and you were born abroad?

So, if you born British and in the uk, then your son is automatically British by descent. You can apply for his British passport directly.

Thanks for your help. Should we register his birth at the nearest British consulate as well? What would be the advantages of doing this, and how much would it cost? Thanks.
